BIFMA, the not-for-profit trade association for business and institutional furniture manufacturers in the U.S., launched 'BIFMA Compliant' on March 1, 2021. The voluntary program introduces BIFMA Compliant, a new product register that will list all products that conform to the trade association's safety and durability standards; and a new BIFMA Conformance mark that can be displayed on approved products, packaging, and marketing materials. This program is designed to enable manufacturers to demonstrate that their products meet BIFMA's safety and durability standards, and to support architects, designers, B2B buyers, and consumers in the easy identification of products that are safe, have been tested, and can be trusted. For almost 50 years, BIFMA has sponsored the development and refinement of standards, taught their importance and application, and translated their complexity into formats that are easily understood and implemented. "As a BIFMA member and an active participant in its technical committees, we are properly positioned to guide manufacturers through BIFMA's testing and compliance process. In the end, we believe it's only trusted because it's tested." CIL, through its ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory, can test the performance of furniture products and demonstrate compliance against nine physical and mechanical standards that focus on safety and durability: Office seating, Lounge and public seating, Desk products, Panel products, Storage, Educational seating, Occasional use seating, Large occupancy seating, Small office/home office. CIL assists manufacturers, retailers, and buyers to ensure well-designed, functional, durable, and safe products reach the consumer by checking a product's compliance against regional, national, and international standards and a company's own specifications. Its furniture services cover all aspects of indoor and outdoor furnishings. When developing or sourcing a new product, employing CIL's expertise to test it prior to launch can save financial cost, logistical difficulty, and reputational damage of recalling or fixing defective items. Social Responsibility, Management practices designed to avoid, detect or respond to threats to employee and community health and safety is the main focus of this section. Credits will be awarded for inclusiveness, good corporate citizenship, community engagement and instilling these practices into the supply chain. The Three Conformance Tiers of BIFMA level, The BIFMA level is divided into three conformance tiers. Tested furniture products can be awarded a level 1, level 2, or level 3 conformance mark based on the accrued score achieved in their sustainability evaluation. Scoring is based on the degree to which the product, the manufacturer and production facilities meet sustainability requirements in the four areas of Materials, Energy & Atmosphere, Human & Ecosystem Health and Social Responsibility. CIL testing capabilities include but not limited to, Size, The size of furniture directly affects the function of furniture use. Stability, Stability is an indicator to ensure the safety of furniture in use. Rigidity, The ability of furniture to resist deformation under static load is the rigidity of furniture. Structural strength, This is a key property of furniture. It consists of two meanings, one is the carrying capacity of the furniture, and the other is the ability of the furniture to repeatedly resist. Durability, Mainly to test the elastic fatigue resistance of upholstered furniture elastic materials. Comfort property, Whether or not to eliminate fatigue when using furniture is related to comfort. Flexibility, It is just a performance for some furniture parts. For example, whether the drawer push and pull is difficult, whether the door switch is flexible, and so on. Surface property, After treating the surface of furniture, it should have a certain degree of resistance to some bad conditions that may be encountered in use.
